Seán grew up in County Clare and took up cycling at 28 after
leaving corporate work — a decision that completely changed
his life. What started as weekend rides around Lough Derg
turned into something much bigger. He became fascinated by
the region's potential for accessible cycling, especially
for older riders. That passion led him to study Geography
and Environmental Studies at University College Cork.
Over the past 15 years, he's become one of Ireland's most
respected voices on gentle cycling routes and age-friendly
cycling infrastructure. He's worked with local tourism
boards, the Irish Cycling Federation, and community groups
to develop routes that don't require high fitness levels or
aggressive riding. The work got personal when his own
parents took up leisure cycling in their sixties — that's
when he really understood why this matters.
These days, Seán combines meticulous on-the-ground testing
with consultation from actual older cyclists. He's
documented every detail of routes like the Lough Derg Way
from Ballina to Killaloe — the flat terrain, the rest stops,
the water sources, the gentle grades. His belief is simple:
cycling should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age
or ability.
At centristx Solutions Ltd, he brings this expertise to
cycling guides, route planning, and tourism content. He's
the person you want reviewing a route if you're over 60 and
want to know if it's really manageable.
